Dear Parents and Guardians,

The School Counseling Program at Heritage Middle School serves all students in grades 6-8th and focuses on growth in:

·         personal/social development,

·         academic development, and

·         career awareness.

We serve students in a variety of settings, including classroom guidance lessons and individual and/or group counseling. Topics include bully prevention, career exploration, social skills, study skills, and positive self-image. Lessons are designed as appropriate for each student’s grade level and developmental level.

If you have a concern about your child’s academic and/or emotional well-being, please contact us and make a referral. Referrals may also come directly from the student or a teacher when they recognize a need. If you would like for your child NOT to participate in school counseling, you have the right to request in writing that your child be exempt.

In addition to counseling, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Hunt are Coordinators for our school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) and 504 services. These services and the school counseling program combine with the faculty and staff at HMS to make a difference in the life of your child. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of his/her education!

We hope your child has a wonderful year, full of excitement about learning. We believe this happens with your support and the enriching experiences that our teachers plan. We appreciate you!

Mrs. Amanda Johnston & Mrs. Shaneka Hunt

Hello, Heritage Generals!  My name is Amanda Johnston and I am excited to serve as one of your school counselors. I received my B.A. in psychology from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, and my M.A. in Community Counseling from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. ROLL TIDE!

After working 6 years as a Mental Health Counselor with Avita Community Partners, I began my career as a school counselor at Riverview Middle School in Dawsonville, GA. We moved to Ringgold in 2013 where I am excited to be working at Heritage Middle School. This school year marks my 10th year as a Professional School Counselor.

When I am not at HMS, I enjoy spending time with my family and trying not to be the worst soccer mom on the sideline.  I am happily married to my husband, Patrick, of 18 years and we have two awesome children, Abi and Nathaniel. We also have two fur babies, Sugar Biscuit (dog) and Sigmond (cat) that are both up for the laziest pet award.

Hello! My name is Shaneka Hunt and I’m the newest counselor at HMS, starting in January 2017. I am a lifelong resident of this area, growing up in Chickamauga. I graduated from Gordon Lee High School, received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from UTC (1999), a Master of Education in School Counseling from Liberty University (2012), and am currently working towards an Educational Specialist in School Counseling from Valdosta State University. My past career experience includes sales and juvenile probation with the Department of Juvenile Justice.

TJ and I have been married since 2003 and have two children, Madi and Ty, who keep us on the go! We attend Burning Bush Baptist Church and are very active in community sports. I also currently serve as the head coach for the HMS Five Star Dance Team. We dance at football and basketball games as well as competitions. See you there!
